The Basics- National Minimum Wage Increase 2022
Here’s a quick reminder of the minimum wage increase now in effect from January 1st, 2022.
The new top minimum rate is €10.50/hr for those ages 20 years and older.
If you have employees aged 19, it’s €9.45/hr, aged 18 increases to €8.40/hr, and junior workers under 18 years old must be paid at least €7.35/hr.
The first instance of these increases should be for last week’s New Year Bank Holiday pay! If you have not applied the new rates then, rectify it in the next payroll run!
The new year is also a great time to implement improvements to your HR record keeping, such as tightening up on your recorded break periods.
Employees over 18 years qualify for a 15 minute paid break after 4.5 hours worked. They must not work over 4.5 hours before commencing the break.
For junior workers under 18 years, this is reduced to 4 hours before they qualify for a paid break. There are further break entitlements for longer shifts which kick in after 6 hours, and also restrictions around the total hours worked per day and week, rest periods including between shifts, and the latest time that an employee under 18 can remain on the premises.
